The work of Michael Maglaras & Terri Templeton

Why did 300 artists paint 20,000 objects?

Date

Writer/director Michael Maglaras introduces an important excerpt from the upcoming 217 Films release of “Enough to Live On: The Arts of the WPA” (Music by David Dvorin).

This clip features the importance of the Index of American Design…part of the WPA Federal Art Project from 1935 until 1943.

More than 300 artists created over 20,000 watercolor renderings of classic American design, including furniture, textiles, fashion, and everyday objects, all with the idea that, through the auspices of the Federal Art Project, an important part of America’s cultural heritage would be preserved, while at the same time skilled draftsmen and artists would be employed at a time when jobs for artists were scarce in America.
