In his role as director of the Bates College Museum of Art, Mark Bessire was an integral partner in collecting and granting permission to 217 Films for important source material used in the documentary Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet. The 217 Films crew offers Mark our hearty congratulations as he assumes his new role as director of the Portland Museum of Art. Visible Silence contains images of many drawings, photos, and artifacts from the extensive Bates collection. The magnificent toy soldier used in this film clip below was owned by Hartley and is part of the Bates collection.
