WATERVILLE, MAINE (April 10, 2009) — In celebration of the Alex Katz Foundation’s recent gift of six paintings by Marsden Hartley to the Colby College Museum of Art’s collection, the museum will present the Maine-made documentary “Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet,” which illuminates the life and work of American master Marsden Hartley. This documentary will screen in Given Auditorium at the Colby College Museum of Art, 5600 Mayflower Hill Drive in Waterville at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 23. This screening is free and open to the public.

The six Hartley paintings donated by the Alex Katz Foundation include still lifes and landscapes. These paintings are on view at the museum and join three Hartley’s already in the museum’s permanent collection.

Born in Lewiston, Marsden Hartley (1878-1943) is acknowledged as one of the founders of American modernism. “Visible Silence: Marsden Hartley, Painter and Poet” is the first documentary ever made about this world-renowned painter. It was written, directed, and narrated by Michael Maglaras of 217 Films. Maglaras will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions following the screening.
